100 Pesos 1991 Puerta de Alcala Madrid PF67 Ultra Cameo

You see here the 100 pesos gold coin from Cuba from 1991 with the motive “Alcala Gate” in Madrid from the series “The Year of Spain”.

This gold coin was dedicated to the Alcala Gate in Madrid. The Alcala Gate is one of the 5 main gates that gave access to the formerly fortified city of Madrid. The name comes from the fact that it was the access to the road towards the nearby city of Alcalá de Henares. Madrid had fortification walls from the Moorish period (9th century), which were modified after the expulsion of the Moors from Spain (10th, 11th century) and repeatedly expanded as the city grew. Eventually it became obsolete in the 16th century, and most of it was demolished. The Alcala Gate and other gates and parts of the city walls are still preserved as monuments.

This coin has a small edition of only 225 pieces.

Additionally, this gold coin was certified by the NGC with a grade of PF67 Ultra Cameo, only three coins have ever been graded better by the NGC.
