You see here the 100 pesos gold coin from Cuba from 1991 with the motive “Bartolome de las Casas” from the series “Hispanic-American figures”.

This gold coin was dedicated to Bartolomé de las Casas. Fray Bartolomé de las Casas was a Spanish landowner, monk, priest and bishop of the 16th century, famous as a historian and social reformer. He came to La Española as a layman and then became a Dominican friar and priest. He was named the first resident bishop of Chiapas and the first officially appointed “protector of the Indians.” His extensive writings, the best known of which are “A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies” and “Historia de Las Indias” (History of the Indies), record the first decades of the colonization of the West Indies. He described the atrocities committed by the colonizers against the indigenous peoples.

This coin has a small edition of only 100 pieces.
