Protea 1 oz 1986 gold coin South Africa

This is the very rare Protea 1 oz gold coin from South Africa from 1986. This copy is limited to only about 4700 editions worldwide and for this reason is particularly popular with collectors and enthusiasts around the world. This gold coin was issued in Germiston (Johannisburg) to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the company. Produced and issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the City of Johannesburg in 1986.

Front:

On the obverse of the gold coin, the plant “Protea” is clearly visible in the center. The plant genus Protea (sugar bushes) is one of the typical silver tree plants found in South Africa. Around the plant you can see the inscription “Suid – Africa”, “South Africa” and the year of minting “1986”.

Back:

The reverse of the gold coin depicts Johannesburg with mines. In 1886, Johannesburg was founded as a tent city and small gold mining settlement. Gold was found on the Witwatersrand in the spring of 1886. This literally created a gold rush and the population of the town kept growing. Around the motif, the inscription “1886 Johannesburg 1986”, “1 OZ” can be seen.
