South Africa – Protea GRC – 1993 – 1 oz Proof – Gold

This is the very rare Protea 1 oz gold coin from South Africa from 1993. This specimen is limited to only 500 copies worldwide with its GRC Mintmark and for this reason is especially popular with collectors and coin enthusiasts around the world. This gold coin was produced and issued for the bicentennial of banks in South Africa.

Front:
On the obverse of the gold coin, the plant “Protea” is clearly visible in the center. The plant genus Protea (sugar bushes) is one of the typical silver tree plants found in South Africa. Around the plant you can see the inscription “Suid – Africa”, “South Africa” and the year of minting “1993”.

Back:
The reverse of the gold coin features the Reserve Bank in South Africa. Around them are coins and a lion’s head. Around the motif you can see the inscription “1793 Banking Banking 1993”, “1 OZ Fan Gold Protea 1 OZ Fine Gold”.

The coin is housed in a slab of the SA Mint with the number 082/500.
